In 2008, Niagara Regional Council approved annual funding of $1.5 million dollars to increase prosperity for Niagara residents living in poverty. The Niagara Prosperity Initiative (NPI) uses a neighbourhood-based approach as specific poverty issues and community dynamics vary from neighbourhood to neighbourhood. To date there have been 277 projects that have been funded by NPI with over 73 different community agencies and groups involved.
